Since July 7 I have been following a new regimen with the help of a dietitian and the results are showing to my great pleasure, however this means that all my clothes now need to be altered, I have lost 3 cm on my waist which makes a difference, I find that this weight loss makes me look more distinguished. My doctor also mentioned that for men's health a slimmer waist is far better than the North American paunch which is so common here in Canada and elsewhere. Apparently many health problems for men start with a large waist area, diabetes type 2 and heart problems which then lead to other serious problems.

In Mykonos in October 2010.
I am now hoping to conclude by arriving at my goal which is 70 Kg. I am only 3 kg off at this time, I have lost about 14 Kg. or 25lbs. My goal of 70 kg is what I call my Asian weight target, in China most men weigh between 60 to 70 kg on average which is far less than Western men.
Another discovery I made while in Ottawa at the old By Ward market, I found this new apple called Honey Crisp, they are not very common on the market yet but very good, bigger than a Mac Intosh and certainly more juicy and sweet.
You know the old saying an apple a day keeps the doctor away, it is apparently true and proven now by new medical studies.

minus 3 Kg and 3 cm

So my dietitian tells me that I am doing quite well with my program to lose weight. It all started in June when someone at the office spoke of this great doctor who helped a lot of people with their diet. I was around 83 Kg then and was not happy, I did not overeat but simply leading a sedentary life does it to you.
So she explained that it is all mathematical and a question of approach, she's a German doctor. The diet she gave me was and remains quite reasonable and it is all foods I eat anyway, so there was no abrupt changes. It helps also in Italy that we have little to no pre-prepared or processed foods and frozen foods remains limited on the market, can goods are also fairly limited.
When I first met her I was around 80 kg, and now I am at 76.5 Kg and have lost 3 cm on my waist, I need to loose another 4 Kg and if I can loose also another 4 cm on my waist that would be great according to the Dr. Lattermann.
One kilo = 2.2 Lbs. So I lost 3kg or 6.6 lbs.
In centimeters 3 cm = 1.18 inches
So I need to loose another 4 kg or 8.8 lbs and 4 cm or 1.57 inches. I really think I can do it and do not see that goal as impossible. In fact I am quite motivated.

diet & balance
Since I arrived in Italy I have gained weight, how much I am not sure exactly, maybe 3 kg. that is about 6.6 lbs. not a lot but I don't like it. I did a lot of gym work in China, boxing helped me to loose weight quickly. I really enjoyed the boxing exercise and a few years ago I also developed a fondness for Thai kick boxing. Here in Rome it is different, I don't feel like going to a gym and I really need a coach to push and motivate me.
About a week ago a colleague at work mentioned this dietitian in Parioli. I made an appointment and went to see her today.
First the good news, I found out that I do not weigh 85 kg as I thought but 79.4 kg big difference when you think of it. I would like to weigh between 70 to 75 Kg. or 154 to 165 lbs. So I need to loose 10 pounds to reach the top of my ideal weight.
More importantly I have to reduce by body fat mass, this is the dangerous fat around the waist for men which can lead to all kinds of health problems as you grow older. The doctor is German and speaks Italian, I understand Italian but speak to her in English which she understands. Basically she explained that this is not a diet, diets do not work and are a fad which gives the illusion that you are trying to do something. You have to eat and be happy with what you are eating and she is not asking me to change my eating habits either. It is all about balance and amounts of food you eat to satisfy your appetite and drinking 2 liters of water per day.

She explained that I should not eat a large amount of pasta with a rich sauce and then have bread and a rich dessert all at once. I do not do that but I can see that I should not do a Primi (pasta) and as Secundi (meat) at the restaurant. Basically you eat a pasta dish with a sauce but the amount is reasonable, measured, no bread and no rich sweet dessert, instead have a fruit for dessert. If you have a steak eat, 100 gr, no potatoes, instead have a green salad with a spoon of olive oil. So basically I knew all this before and it reminded me of what I had seen in China and in Italy in terms of eating habits. This is why men are thin here.
This weekend I will do sort of a detox diet, only fruits, salad and 2 liters of water per day. Bread is not out, but if I have some it should be dark Rye bread.
I return to see her in 2 weeks for a second evaluation. Here we go, what we will not do for la bella figura.
